Hatchetfish are found mostly in the Atlantic Ocean, especially around the Bahamas and off the coasts of South American countries like Brazil and Venezuela. π
They live in the mesopelagic zone, which is a fancy name for the area of the ocean from about 200 meters (656 feet) deep to 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) deep. This zone is pretty dark, but hatchetfish have adapted to their unique environment. They usually swim in schools, which helps them stay safe from larger fish and ocean predators!
